The story is known and familiar to us – the parting of the Red Sea, getting water out of the stone with his staff and the Lord’s appearing to Moses in the burning bush.

According to tradition the code of the staff reaches us from the Garden of Eden, through to Noah and then the 3 patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, finally reaching Moses. “And he took the staff of God in his hand” (Exodus 4:20). The word Selah (Stone) is composed of 3 letters – samech, lamed, ayin. When Moses hit the stone with the staff twice, all obstacles were removed and water came rushing out. On the other side of the charm there is the Halel prayer (prayer of praise) of the Jewish people to the Almighty:

“The LORD is my strength and my defense ; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him” (Exodus 15:2).
