Noble Metals and Tips on How to Care for Your Silver Jewelry

Noble metals, silver, gold, platinum, are so named because of their resistance to various conditions.

From the dawn of time until the present we use these metals mainly for jewelry.

In order for you to enjoy your jewelry for a long period of time, here are some tips for upkeeping and maintaining jewelry made of noble metals.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver or 925 silver is the standard used in the jewelry industry. Because pure silver is too soft, a little copper is added to the silver which strengthens it. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

Gold

The metal with the highest value. Carat – the percentage of pure gold.

14k is 58.5% gold. The higher the percentage of gold, the softer it becomes. Today gold is produced with one percent titanium to strengthen it.

Gold Filled (G.F)

This metal is not one of the noble metals but its use is growing so I decided to share the composition of the metal with you

Filled gold. A metal whose outer face is gold (usually 14k) and within a base metal face such as brass. Gold in G.F. is a high percentage in the metal and therefore does not scratch, peel or flake off on its own when the jewel is properly taken care of.

Tips for maintaining your silver:

In nature, silver is black, and in the process of converting it into jewelry, materials are used to whiten and polish the silver.

Silver sometimes turns black when it comes into contact with skin and even with the air.

Some people’s body acidity will cause blackening of the silver.

It is recommended to occasionally clean the jewelry with a special cleaning cloth. It is advisable to shower with the jewel; the water prevents the silver from turning black and even cleans it if it is has already gotten dark.

When you are not wearing the jewelry, it is advisable to store it in a jewelry box, cloth bag or drawer in order to minimize oxidation.

It is advisable to store jewelry separately to prevent scratches. Do not bring the jewelry into contact with various chemicals that cause blackening or any other reaction.

Avoid entering the sea or the pool with silver jewelry. Do not wash dishes with your jewelry or spray perfume on it.
